Film studies and Digital Video Senior SeminarIn our heavily mediated 21st century life comes in apps and networks moderated on screens, having a firm understanding of visual literacy is essential. So many ads and PSA’s play on our inability to parse meaning and literally readings of moving picture with sound can miss the human experience questions and messages that need more nuance and tools to unpack.. These courses offer a guide to how movies and films were made and how media is used and made today. The work from before corporate rule from different nations on Earth was and said a lot about the world we live in now and has shaped and raised our students, looking back we can see how we got here and in watching work we can gain cautions, lessons, directions, empathy, and understanding, conversely all opposites can be mutated and generated so context guidance and conversation is important or that slide into negative thinking can be quick and its own trap.
While Film studies is only a surface scratch to the depth of films on Earth the flow of the year's content pushes and pulls towards multidimensional thinking away from singular fixed views of the human condition and the power of motion picture storytelling to see more than one's own life’s perspective. The subjects, time periods, places, characters, and settings move us around the U.S. and planet to things that connect us and what have been different for us and different generations. Sometimes it refracts the current events and sometimes it reflects. Always telling how it was made and put together and in analysis and dissection the whys and whats surface. The program has evolved to include what are seen to be part of the canon of classics with under seen masterworks. Many films are included into the Library of Congress’s Film Library and others both championed and controversial in their time, as the years have progressed some films are one timers and others retire after a long run and new work is paired with the essentials all while charting my own widened perspective and cinema roots. The abstract zoom in and zoom out thinking movies can allow for a very special student experience while not every film is for everyone’s tastes there is often one work or one student that finds a particular dialog throughout the year within the variety. As we get farther from the video store and cable eras and more and more work gets vaulted or acquired by big companies this tour gives names and benchmarks to lay foundation for each persons to see list and at least for ubiquitous cultural references, reaction gifs, and memes this class can unpack the origins of tropes, icons, images, legends, famous, and infamous, to gain understanding of what is part of the common communication language expanding on any students family movie times or friend group conversations of the latest streaming hit this class overs tools and lenes to appreciate and understand the many levels the work is on.
