We had a wonderful night of music and art on Wednesday evening at Maggie L. Walker Governor's School!
Special thanks to our incredible students, teachers, and parents for making our Youth Art and Music Month opening event such a success! The music performances sounded fantastic, the visual art looked amazing and there was such a great community of supporters enjoying the combined talents of all of our students. It takes so much passion and dedication to make this event a success each year! Thanks to everyone who attended and for your ongoing support of our Maggie L. Walker Visual and Performing Arts program. The exhibition will run through March 21st! Here’s just a few photos from opening night. #mlwgs

By raw numbers, our MLWGS regional student representation is only slightly surpassed by schools with much larger student populations. By percentage of enrollment, MLWGS may have the highest ratio of student musicians in our district. 1 in 3 band and orchestra students were accepted regionally. 1 in 8 are eligible at the state level.
In addition, 2 band students and 2 orchestra students were accepted into All-State. Congratulations to all of our talented Maggie L. Walker Governor's School musicians! The MLWGS Visual Art department kicked off our post-COVID new season of Lunchtime Lectures with the dynamic Richmond portrait artist, Stanley Rayfield. Stanley shared his artistic journey from his start at the Henrico Center for the Arts, through VCU, and up to his current successful career as a professional portrait painter. He also showed in-process works of his recently finished commission of the official state portrait of former Governor of VA, Ralph Northam which now hangs in the VA State Capital building. His insights into his trajectory and his work process were inspiring for all our students!
Our Lunchtime Lecture series are designed to bring local artist and art professionals to share their career experiences with our students. These talks often are aligned with the MLWGS Global Cycle where students are learning about a specific region of the world in their freshmen and sophomore Global Studies classes. These Lunchtime Lectures are sponsored by the MLWGS Visual and Performing Arts Department, the MLWGS Visual Arts Boosters, and our chapter of the National Art Honors Society. Lectures are scheduled quarterly. |
