Where is Varun now? Dual Degree with Sciences Po in Reims, France and Columbia University. “I came to Maggie Walker knowing that my end goal wasn’t music, but taking band for four years made me realize that music could still be a huge part of my identity. I fell in love with the community which extended far beyond the walls of Maggie Walker. Not only was it fun hanging out with other band nerds before concerts and after rehearsals, but Mr. Merillat helped connect us with local music professors and opportunities all the time. I met all kinds of incredible people with whom I now have unforgettable memories. Even now, as I study politics in France, that community helps me. A common language of music has allowed me to connect with musicians from across the world: one of my best friends is a Tahitian saxophone player who loves jazz, and our friendship grew thanks to discussions of the musicians I learned about in band class. No matter where your future takes you or what you plan to do there, you will not regret having developed a passion for music.”
